State Park Activities

The State Parks sponsored activities run from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Park Day use fees apply for nature walks and activities. Wednesday, June 26th 10:00 a.m. JUNIOR RANGERS – Bears (children ages 7-12 ONLY) Come have some fun discovering the bears that live around Big Sur and what to do if you encounter one. Meet Olivia for this one-hour program of activities at the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Campfire Center (in between kiosk and parking lot #1)

Thursday, June 27th 10:00 a.m. JUNIOR RANGERS—Reptiles (children ages 7-12 ONLY) Although best known for its beauty and scale, Big Sur offers a great diversity of Reptiles. We will explore the different types of reptiles living here at Big Sur. Meet Olivia for this one-hour program of activities at the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Campfire Center (in between kiosk and parking lot #1)

Friday, June 28th 10:00 a.m. Nature Walk “Big Sur Then and Now” While hiking up the Valley View trail to the base of Pfieffer Falls, travel back in time as we learn about the natural history of the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park today from the uplifting of the Big Sur coastline nearly five million years ago! This is a 3/4 mile one-way walk to the waterfall (~45 minutes). Meet Chelsea at the Redwood Deck, next to the Big Sur Lodge.

Saturday, June 29th 10:00 a.m. JUNIOR RANGERS– Animal Adaptations (children ages 7-12 ONLY) Do animals use tools? Come and learn about some of the unique strategies that the animals of Big Sur use to find their food. Meet Chelsea at the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Campfire Center (between the kiosk and parking lot #1) for this one-hour program of activities.

Sunday, June 30th 10:00 a.m. JUNIOR RANGERS– Big Sur River Critters (children ages 7-12 ONLY) Come have some fun, learn about the water cycle, and zoom in on some of the animals that live in the Big Sur River! Meet Chelsea for this one-hour program of activities at the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Campfire Center (between the kiosk and day use lot #1)

11:00 a.m Nature Walk: “ Big Sur through the Ages” Discover how natural and cultural forces shaped the landscape and the people who have lived here. Visit John Pfeiffer’s Homestead cabin, see some of the effects of recent fire activity and look for threatened Steelhead Trout. Wear river shoes if you want to get wet. Meet Olivia at the green fire gate near Day Use Lot #3.

ON-GOING TOURS AND VISITORS CENTERS:

Point Sur Lightstation State Historic Park Tours "Walking Tour into the Past" Volunteer led, three-hour walking tour on paved road. The walk is less than a mile but with a rise in elevation of 300′. Meet along the West Side of Highway 1, ¼ mile north of Pt. Sur Naval facility. Arrive early. Tour size limited. Tours- Saturday: 10 a.m., 2 p.m., Sunday: 10 a.m., and Wednesday: 10 a.m., 2 p.m. Admission Adult: $12.00; Ages 6-17: $5.00; Age 5 and under: free.

Molera Ranch House Museum Find out what it was like to live in Big Sur 100 years ago? Located at Andrew Molera State Park, the Ranch House is open for visitors Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. when a volunteer is available.

Ernst Ewoldsen Nature Center Located near the Pfeiffer Falls/Valley View trailhead is open for visitors Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 11:00 a.m.– 2:00 p.m. Come discover what lives here!

California Condor Discovery Center Come learn about the magnificent condors and the reintroduction program run by the Ventana Wildlife Society. The center is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at Andrew Molera State Park.

Thank you for visiting Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Please be patient as we work to re-open areas of the park after the Basin Complex Fire of 2008 and winter mudflows. Oak Grove and Pfeiffer Falls trails remain closed due to damages. Please stay out of all closed areas.
