CALTRANS WORKERS HIT THE HIGHWAYS FOR COASTAL CLEANUP WEEK
CENTRAL COAST – Caltrans District 5 Maintenance workers are participating in Coastal Cleanup Week, an annual event to remove litter from beaches, lakes and waterways. Caltrans maintains over 12,000 structures and bridges above or alongside inland waterways that eventually flow to the ocean. Caltrans crews will work in the following areas:
· Santa Barbara County –The Santa Barbara Maintenance crew will pick up litter along U.S. Highway 101 in the Carpinteria, Goleta and Santa Barbara areas on Friday, Sept, 19. A graffiti removal effort will take place near the U.S. Highway 101 cross town area during the early morning hours on Friday, Sept, 19. Litter removal will also take place in Buellton, Las Cruces and near the Santa Ynez River. The Cuyama Maintenance crew will remove litter near the Cuyama River.
· San Luis Obispo County – The San Luis Obispo Maintenance crew will pick up litter along U.S. Highway 101 near San Luis Bay Drive to protect San Luis Obispo Creek on Thursday, Sept. 18.
· Monterey County – The Monterey Maintenance crew will pick up litter on Hwy. 1. between the Little Sur River Bridge and the Garrapata Creek Bridge on Thursday, Sept. 18 and Friday, Sept. 19.
· Santa Cruz County – The Santa Cruz Maintenance crew will pick up litter near Hwy. 1 from Shaffer Road to Davenport Landing Road on Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21.
· San Benito County – Litter removal took place earlier this week near U.S. Highway 101 and the San Benito River Bridge.
This effort is part of the “Don’t Trash California” campaign. Last year, 58,000 volunteers removed 750,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from beaches, lakes and waterways.
One way the public can help is by participating in Caltrans’ Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) Program. To become a volunteer or support the program through a paid sponsorship, call 1-866-ADOPT-A-HWY or go to: http://adopt-a-highway.dot.ca.gov <http://adopt-a-highway.dot.ca.gov/> . Currently, about 13,000 volunteers participate in the AAH Program, saving taxpayers an estimated $16 million annually in litter removal costs.
