Come to the Library as we launch yet another new programming series, called Under the Persimmon Tree, featuring our inaugural speaker, world renowned defense attorney J. Tony Serra.

Serra has successfully defended Black Panther leader Huey Newton and represented individuals from groups as diverse and politically charged as the White Panthers, Hells Angels, Earth First!, and New World Liberation Front (NWLF).

Serra won the Trial Lawyer of the Year award in 2003 for his successful litigation of Judi Bari against the FBI.

Tony Serra has spent his life defending society’s outcasts. His role in the Chol Soo Lee case was depicted in the film "True Believer." Tony Serra has always known how to express the poetry of the law, while fighting in the ditches and dark alleys of legal practice. He has gained national prominence for his closing argument techniques

Read more about Tony’s incredible career here.

Tony will read and contextualize three books: his "Walking the Circle – Prison Chronicles " and "The Green, Yellow, and Purple Years of a Radical Lawyer," as well as Lust for Justice – The Radical Life & Law of J. Tony Serra a book about Tony and his cases by Paulette Frankl.

Under the Persimmon Tree gathers people together to talk about the art of writing. Writers, artists, and lecturers will speak under — you guessed it — the persimmon tree on the Library deck. Topics will range from anything pertaining to the art of writing: songwriting, screenwriting, fiction, poetry, journalism, etc.

This event is by donation. Tea and coffee will be served.
