Today’s Public Information Map
As you can see on this map the fire is south of the Big Sur River. This is the burning operation by Cal Fire. They fired it up in Terrace Creek Camp and created that backfire shaped like an eyebrow. They are burning east of Coast Ridge Road. The idea is to keep it from coming into the area where the homes were burned in the 2008 Basin Complex Fire.
Firing went well yesterday, 8/12/16 and it will continue today. “The fire is going really well and it doesn’t look like its going to be an issue,” said Ray Martinez, Cal Fire PIO for Big Sur. “The reason they gave the 24-48 hour warning is because they figured they’d fire this and get it done. If they do close the road, it is a situation of the fire getting too intense.
The air quality is categorized as “Unhealthy” today. Stay indoors or away from the smoke if possible.
From the Cal Fire Soberanes Fire Update this morning:
Fire was backing through the night but there was minimal fire growth overnight. Firing operations over the next few days, to secure fire line in the Big Sur area, may necessitate the closure of Hwy 1 at times. Avoid the area if possible.
The PDF’s of the maps haven’t been posted yet. I’ll add those to this post when they get posted.
