CALTRANS
Highway 1 Update
Friday, January 27
3:00 PM

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Our Maintenance and Geotech crews have been working diligently, clearing, cleaning, and scaling as much as safely possible in response to these rock/mudslides.

***INFORMATION***

*We have numerous slides between the closure points, the largest being at: Mud Creek (PM 8.8, shown above), Paul’s Slide (PM 21.6), Big Creek (PM 28.09) and at Anderson Cyn. Bridge (PM 35.4)

CONTINUOUS SLIDES KEEP ROAD CLOSED FROM RAGGED POINT (SLO PM 72.87) TO FULLER’S (MON PM 42) DUE TO ROCK/MUDSLIDES AT MULTIPLE LOCATIONS. All Motorists may travel south on Hwy. 1 from Carmel to Fuller’s (PM 42) or travel north from Cambria to Ragged Point.

CHP is monitoring the closure at Fuller’s.

Another update will be provided tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Jan. 28, or sooner if conditions change.

  1. I have found your blob to be helpful but the recent entries are a little vague to me… Being that folk are trying to reach Esalen I am interested if the roads are clear from North to South for visitors… I did cancel my reservation for classes at Esalen for the week of Jan 27th to Feb 3rd as it appeared that the slide at Anderson’s was still impassible for visitors. I would like to request that in the future it would be very valuable to the hundreds of Esalen visitors if your blog would write to the open or closed road conditions and if by chance you may know if there is possibly a projected date of the slide(s) being clear. I sincerely Thank You for your priceless information as again I found your reporting on slides the most clear to understand.

    • Hi Ahleen, The Big Sur Blog posts the highway updates given to us by Caltrans and supported by CHP. Going back to January 23 there has been a hard closure in place, which has been posted, with varying degrees of passage offered to locals at times which one would have to verify with ID. To a looser degree, people who work at Esalen and are driving in from town have been given passage with proof of employment. Being a guest at a workshop at Esalen doesn’t qualify.

The Caltrans statement was this or a slight variation: CONTINUOUS SLIDES KEEP ROAD CLOSED FROM RAGGED POINT (SLO PM 72.87) TO FULLER’S (MON PM 42) DUE TO ROCK/MUDSLIDES AT MULTIPLE LOCATIONS. All Motorists may travel south on Hwy. 1 from Carmel to Fuller’s (PM 42) or travel north from Cambria to Ragged Point. This seems pretty clear. Sorry for any inconvenience. I know Caltrans is working from before sunrise to sunset every day to clear the highway and make it safe for visitors.
