Highway 1 Update Friday, Feb. 10, 9:15 AM

CALTRANS
Highway 1 Update

Friday, February 10
9:15 AM

The inclement weather continues to give us more slides at multiple locations, the largest challenges being at: Mud Creek (PM 8.8), Chimney Slide ((PM 19), Paul’s Slide (PM 21.6), Big Creek (PM 28.09), Cow Cliffs (PM 28.35) and Deetjen’s (PM 43.17), require closure to continue at Nepenthe (PM 44) until further notice.

Photos from today of: 1) Mud Creek (PM 8.8); 2)New Creek at North End of Mud Creek (PM 8.8); 3) Gorda (PM 10); 4) Chimney Slide (PM 19)—Cannot get to Paul’s Slide until this is cleaned up; 5) Rain Rocks (PM 21.3); 6) Paul’s at end of the day yesterday.

***SAME INFORMATION, NEW INFORMATION FOR LOCALS***

State Route 1 is now closed between Ragged Pt. (SLO 72.87) and just south of Nepenthe (Mon 44).

Motorists may travel north on State Route 1 from Cambria to Ragged Point (SLO PM 72.87) or south from Carmel to Nepenthe’s (PM 44).

The roadway is not passable between Ragged Pt (SLO 72.87) and Nepenthe (PM 44)

*LOCALS MAY NOT TRAVEL NORTH BETWEEN RAGGED POINT AND SANTA LUCIA RANCH (PM 31.10)…MUD CREED IS NOT PASSABLE AND CONSTRUCTION CREWS ARE NOT PRESENT TODAY…BUT LOCALS MAY TRAVEL SOUTH FROM NEPENTHE TO LUCIA RANCH (31.1) AS THERE ARE SEVERAL LOCATIONS WITH ONLY ONE LANE OPEN DUE TO ROCK/MUDSLIDES.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Our Maintenance, Geotech and Construction crews continue to work collaboratively and diligently, as much as safely possible in response to these rock/mudslides.

Another update will be provided on around mid-morning tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 11, or sooner if conditions change.

  1. Thanks for these posts everyday which I eagerly look forward to. CalTrans should accurately refer to PM 31.10 as “Santa Lucia Ranch” as it is actually named, for as they may not know the location of Lucia at PM 23 on its east side of the highway is sometimes referred to as a ranch by locals. This is confusing as names jump out more prominently than PM’s. Thanks again for your dedication in turning out this up-to-date easy to read blog.

    • Thank you for pointing this out. I will correct this in our post.

  2. These updates are invaluable, thank you!

Does anyone know if the closure at Lucia is passable by bicycle southbound? I’m touring down the coast and will be trying to get to Nacimiento-Fergusson at least, if not further south on 1. I will be arriving in the area around Tuesday 2/14. Many thanks!

    • Hello David,
Touring bicyclists are not allowed past the closures. That being said, we are going to have a few days of sunshine which will help in getting ahead of the slide activity. Check back on this blog for the latest information. We post here immediately upon getting the information from Caltrans.

  3. Thank you Stan – I will certainly be following updates in the coming days. Seems I may have to get creative on my route to San Diego!
