Coordinating the effort to get garbage hauled out of Big Sur as we want to avoid a public health issue

Caltrans Update

Good morning Rob,

Caltrans will be contacting the flaggers just north of Ragged Pt. to treat garbage trucks as locals, with the understanding that all trucks will comply with the restrictions through Paul’s Slide (PM 21.6) which are:

· Up to 35,000 lbs in total weight

· Up to 30 feet in total length

We realize this may pose a bit of a challenge, but this would simply mean a smaller truck if the length is the issue and maybe a half-full garbage truck—or up to 35,000 lbs, if weight is an issue.

Like I mentioned, we will notify flaggers that garbage trucks will be considered “locals” so you will not have a problem with access.

Kirk and Martha—Please help me disseminate this information.

Thanks!

Residents of Big Sur for any questions or concerns you have regarding waste issues you may contact Waste Management staff at fmelchor@wm.com or kskromme@wm.com. As an update: Waste Management is currently servicing north of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge at regular schedule and south of the down bridge every other Friday. Next service day south of the down bridge will be April 7th.

Morning, Sir.

I am coordinating the effort to get garbage hauled out of Big Sur as we want to avoid a public health issue.

I have also given your email to our vendor to reach out to get info on bridges/roads to get to the population and haul the waste as well as places to place containers for residents to get to themselves.

I’ve included Kristin and Felipe from Waste Management to keep us all in the loop.

Thanks for your help.

Rob

  1. Point of contact for Waste Management staff at fmelchor@wm.com or kskromme@wm.com. As an update: Waste Management is currently servicing north of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge at regular schedule and south of Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge every other Friday. Next service day south of the down bridge will be April 7th.

  2. Afternoon, all. Here is this week’s Big Sur update:

    • Businesses and residents north of Sycamore Bridge will be serviced on schedule with no delays.
    • Businesses and residents south of Sycamore Bridge will have their material picked up every other week on Friday. The next pick up day is tomorrow, April 21.
    • Roll off dumpsters are placed north and south of Sycamore Bridge and are available to be used by residents and businesses. On Friday, April 21 WM, Inc. will be sending another covered 40 yard roll off box south of the road closure.
    • Credit adjustments are available to businesses and residents south of the road closure. Please feel free to have residents contact Kristin Skromme (kskromme@wm.com 831-796-2220) to process their adjustment.

    • Please note wherever “Sycamore Bridge” is noted should read “Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge”. Apologies.

  3. Good afternoon,
The 40 yard dumpster at Vista Point will be emptied tomorrow, Friday, April 29.

  4. Friday, May 5th, Waste Management, Inc. will service all customers south of Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge. One dumpster [owned by Coastal Rolloff] south of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge will also be emptied. Please note there have been reports of another slide [address 64955 Hwy 1] and those customers in proximity may not be serviced due to conditions/access.

  5. The Mud Creek slide will no doubt cause more access issues for some residents.

Here is the guidance from the initial storm when there were access issues:

    1. Anticipate longer pick-up times
    2. Minimize putrescible waste where possible to reduce odor and keep solid waste dry
    3. Reduce volume of solid waste by separating recyclable materials (and keep dry)
    4. Maintain solid waste in closed containers and keep dry as much as possible
    5. Keep on hand sanitary supplies- bleach, gloves, hand sanitizers- in case cleaning is needed for spills.

  6. • Waste Management will be collecting trash from homes and businesses next Friday, June 9. WM is still operating on an every other week collection schedule.
    • On 6/1/17 the dumpsters north of the bridge closure were emptied. WM, Inc. appreciates the residents that called them to let them know the dumpsters were full last week.
    • There are two dumpsters located at Mill Creek and Vista Point. Each week one dumpster will be emptied. Coastal Roll Off is contracting with San Miguel Hauling Company to empty the dumpsters at Mill Creek and Vista Point.
    • Credits are being offered to customers that have not received pick up from Waste Management. Please call Kristin Skromme at 831.796.2220 for more information.
