Current Big Sur Highway 1 Closures

Current Big Sur Highway 1 Closures.
Map by Big Sur Chamber of Commerce, annotations by Sara Arnet, State Parks.

  1. Do you think that vehicles will be able to drive through, SF to LA via Hwy 1, by August 18th?

    • No. Estimated completion of the bridge is 10 months out.

    • That is sooner than Caltrans is suggesting the bridge will be finished so I’d say unlikely but perhaps they’ll go faster than expected if all goes well. No guarantee.

  2. Oh no, planned our holiday late september…we would travel from LA to SF via Highway 1. Will only the Pfeiffer Bridge be closed at this time and will this be a big detour?

    Greetings from the Netherlands

    • It may be open then. Please check back closer to your travel date.

  3. With Nascimiento-Furgeson opening tomorrow with access to Limekiln Park, will the campground be opening as well?

    • Yes!

  4. Sorry if this is a stupid question but we are from out of town. We are planning to drive from SF to LA this week, stopping in Monterey and Pismo Beach for overnights. Can any of the drive be done along 1 or should we take an inland road? Also, does the expected rain make it even less likely we should try the coastal drive? Thank you!

    • You’re going to have to take the inland route, Highway 101. The Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge is out and won’t be repaired for several months.

    • Yes, you can drive 26 miles south of Carmel. At that point you will have to turn around and go back the same way you came. Then, take Highway 68 east to 101 south.

  5. Hello! Should we be able to get to Big Sur from Los Gatos in July? thank you!

    • Yes.

  6. Super helpful map, Couldnt figure out where these spots were. Thank you.

    • You’re welcome!
