FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CALTRANS RELEASES RENDERINGS OF NEW PFEIFFER CANYON BRIDGE ON STATE ROUTE 1

MONTEREY COUNTY – Caltrans has released three renderings of the new Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge to replace the structure that was damaged by winter storms this season and demolished last month.

The new bridge will be constructed using steel girders and will extend 320 feet above the canyon and will not include columns which were part of the original structure built in 1967. The elimination of the columns will prevent this bridge from being damaged by future landslides.

This new bridge is estimated to cost $24 million dollars and is expected to be accessed by the public in mid-to-late September.

  1. Stan Russell Great to see these updates and your replies to travellers queries. I have signed up for new updates.
My wife and I are flying into LA via Dublin on 5th June for a 15 day fly drive via Las Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite and Monterey (arriving here on Monday 12th June). We had then planned to drive down Big Sur to Pismo Beach, Santa Monica finishing in LA. Obviously this part is now up for re routing via HWY101.
You mentioned in a reply to another enquirer that you are able to drive 26 miles south of Carmel before retracing your route, taking the HWY68 up to Salinas to join HWY101 southbound. Does this mean you can drive down as far as Notleys Landing or Bixby Creek Bridge ?
Also how far can you drive Northbound on HWY1 from San Luis Opisbo ?

    Look forward to your reply

    • Hello Paul,
Yes, you will be able to visit Bixby Creek Bridge. Bixby Bridge is located 11 miles south of Carmel and you can actually drive as far as Pfeiffer Ranger Station which is located 26 miles south of Carmel.
As far as how far north you can drive from SLO, at this point Ragged Point is as far north as you can drive.

      • Stan Thank you for this reply. Will keep an eye on this blog as we get nearer to June. My wife thinks we might be jinks. First this, then last night a fire a the Bellagio over in Vegas , where we are to stay 4 nights. !!
