Mill Fire Incident Overview


The Mill Fire was reported at 5:36 a.m. on July 30, 2019 on Mill Creek, off of the Nacimiento-Ferguson Road and north-west of the Ventana Wilderness. It is currently estimated at 310 acres with 95% containment. The fire was unstaffed last night. Only a few interior smokes have been observed. Today, helicopter dropped water on hot spots.

A Forest Closure Order, which will take effect on August 4th, 2019, has been issued for the following areas: Nacimiento Ferguson Road from Highway 1 to the Forest Boundary at Fort Hunter Liggett, Kirk Creek Trail from Highway 1 to Cone Peak Road, Mill Creek Trail at the junction of Nacimiento Ferguson Road to South Coast Ridge Road, Cone Peak Road from the junction of Nacimiento Ferguson Road to Cone Peak and South Coast Ridge Road from the junction of Nacimiento Ferguson Road to Chalk Peak.

There are currently 100 resources assigned to the fire, including:

Type 1 Helicopters – 1
Type 2 Helicopters – 1
Water Tender – 1

Evacuations: There are currently no evacuations orders in effect for the Mill Fire. However, California’s wildfire season is just beginning. Current Fire Restrictions: The Los Padres National Forest currently does not allow open fires, campfires or charcoal fires outside of developed recreation sites or designated Campfire Use Sites even with a valid California Campfire Permit. Outlook

Planned Actions Increase containment and keep the fire from crossing Nacimiento Ferguson Road to the south into the Ventana Wilderness and from getting into Mill and Kirk Creek drainages and north of Cone Peak.

Current Weather

Weather Concerns Typical weather patterns along the Big Sur Coast line is to have a marine layer between 1000 to 1500 feet. Land above that elevation has no humidity recovery or influence from the marine layer, which increases fire behavior. High pressure continues to establish today with expected increase in temperatures and decrease of relative humidities.
