Big Sur International Marathon Information with Caravan Schedule

Hello friends in the hospitality industry,

As you hopefully know, the Big Sur International Marathon will be taking place in just under two weeks. We wanted to reach out to give you some information to pass along to your members so that they can let their visitors know of the activities and any potential traffic issues.

Here are the basics:

  • The race takes place Sunday morning, April 30.
  • Highway 1 between the Carmel Highlands and Big Sur will be closed to visitor traffic on Sunday, 4/30, beginning at 4 a.m. (Hotel employees needing to travel south will be provided Access Passes in advance of race weekend.)
  • Visitor access on Highway 1 between Carmel and Big Sur is available through car ‘caravans’ that are led by CHP officers. I have attached a schedule of the times scheduled for both southbound and northbound caravans (see page 2 of attachment). Visitors wishing to travel south during the event will be directed to a ‘holding area’ on Rio Road (accessible via Carmel Rancho Blvd.) and will be released into a southbound caravan according to the times listed.
  • The highway will be open to through-traffic after 1 p.m., Sunday, April 30. Ideally, local visitors should be encouraged to stay on the Peninsula and take advantage of our area’s many attractions until after 1p.m.
  • There are no Highway 1 travel restrictions to Big Sur on Friday or Saturday, April 28 and 29.

We would like to get this information distributed to the local hotels and especially to the concierges working on marathon weekend. In addition to the caravan schedule postcard, I am attaching a few photos if you’d like to include any of these in your messaging.

The marathon weekend provides a great economic stimulus for our hospitality industry. We hope it is a good experience for your members. If you have any specific questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thanks so much for letting me know if you are able to disseminate this information. If not, and you want to provide me a list of concierges and/or hotel contacts, please feel free to do so.

Best regards,

P.S. In addition to the Sunday event, there is a two-day Health & Fitness Expo taking place at the Monterey Conference Center, Friday, April 28 from 12 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, April 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is a fun and lively event for participants and open to the public as well.
