VWA Welcomes New Executive Director Mike Chamberlain

.

Just prior to coming on board, Mike (center) volunteered to support a trail crew led by
Betsy MacGowan and Brian Robinson. Here they are near Mocho Camp on the Big Sur Trail.

VWA Welcomes New Executive Director Mike Chamberlain

The Board of Directors of the Ventana Wilderness Alliance is pleased to announce the appointment of new executive director Mike Chamberlain. Mike comes to us with over 25 years of environmental and conservation nonprofit leadership under his belt, including a 22-year stint at the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, where he drove public messaging for 2+ million annual visitors.

VWA Board chair David Jacobs summed up Mike’s qualifications: “For over 20 years, Mike has been a conservation leader in the Monterey Bay Area. He brings to the VWA a commitment to public lands, deep experience in execution of conservation programs, and organizational management skills. His expertise will accelerate the VWA mission of protecting the Big Sur backcountry at this pivotal time.”

Reflecting on his new role, Mike shared that, “The VWA’s singular focus on protecting the Big Sur backcountry was a key reason I was so energized to join the VWA family of staff, volunteers and loyal supporters. The need to educate and advocate for the preservation of the Ventana and Silver Peak Wilderness Areas has never been greater—I’m so proud to play a role in its stewardship alongside the passionate, dedicated VWA team.”

Mike and his family have called Carmel Valley Village home for over 20 years. Mike can be reached at mike — feel free to drop him a line. He’s always happy to chat about our important work, and how you can get involved and support it. Please join the VWA board and staff in welcoming Mike to the Alliance.

Caltrans QuickMap Push Notifications Now Available

Date: Wednesday, August 17, 2022
District: 05 – Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz Counties
Contact: Tamie McGowen
Phone: (916) 956-0633

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Caltrans QuickMap Push Notifications Now Available
New App Feature Alerts Drivers to Nearby Road Closures and Emergencies

SACRAMENTO — Caltrans has launched a new push notification feature on its QuickMap app that allows drivers to automatically receive real-time notifications about nearby road closures, emergencies and other traffic updates.

“With this new QuickMap upgrade, Californians now can receive instant traffic notifications based on their location,” said Caltrans Director Tony Tavares. “Drivers can use this information to adjust their plans when needed, compare route options, save time and travel safely to their destinations.”

Caltrans’ QuickMap is a mobile app and website available to the public at no cost for travel planning. QuickMap provides immediate traffic information, including traffic speed, lane and road closures due to construction and maintenance activities, emergency incidents, electronic highway message sign content, rest area locations, camera snapshots, and active chain control requirements.

The new QuickMap push notification feature allows travelers to opt-in to receive location-based alerts on their mobile devices. When a device with the QuickMap app enters an area within 10 miles of a road closure or other traffic-related event, a pop-up message will appear alerting travelers of the incident, including time, location and reason for closure.

Caltrans reminds drivers to use their mobile device responsibly, including only in hands-free mode when operating a vehicle. Using your cell phone while driving is not only dangerous, but also illegal. In California, drivers 18 and older can only use their phones in a hands-free manner, such as speaker phone or voice commands, but never while holding it.

For more information, and to use the new feature, download the QuickMap app onto your phone or visit QuickMap.dot.ca.gov.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HIGHWAY 1 RETAINING WALL PROJECT TO START JULY 26
WITH 24/7 SIGNALIZED TRAFFIC CONTROL

MONTEREY COUNTY – A construction project on Highway 1 on the Big Sur Coast to build a retaining wall and enhance drainage infrastructure will begin Tuesday July 26.

The project location is on Highway 1 at PM 44.5 at a location known as Coastlands. It is approximately one mile north of the Henry Miller Library and .8 miles south of the Big Sur Post Office.

Winter storms in the first quarter of 2019 caused a slip out below the southbound lanes of travel after which an emergency project secured the hillside. These repairs below the roadway, along with K-Rail placed on the southbound shoulder, have permitted the road to remain open until a permanent repair could be made.

The current project involves construction of a soldier pile retaining wall, installation of guardrail, and additional enhancements to drainage infrastructure and landscaping, which will permanently restore the site.

Starting on July 26, travelers will encounter 24/7 one-way traffic control as temporary signals will be activated at each end of the project parameters. Travelers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

Travelers will encounter reduced speed limits in the area in addition to the 24/7 signalized one-way traffic control beginning Tuesday, July 26.

Travelers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

Message and directional signs will alert motorists in advance of the construction area.

Travelers are reminded to be work zone alert and give themselves extra time for their commute along this beauteous corridor.

The contractor for this $1.5 million project is FEC Future Contractors and Engineers Inc. of Irvine, CA. This project is scheduled to conclude in February 2023.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when
driving through highway work zones.

For traffic updates on other state highways in Monterey County, travelers may contact Caltrans District 5 Public Affairs at 805-549-3318 or can visit the District 5 website at: https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-5
