PFEIFFER CANYON BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS ARRIVE NEXT WEEK
MONTEREY COUNTY – Caltrans will begin the process of delivering construction equipment and materials to the site of the demolished Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge on State Route 1 via Nacimiento-Fergusson Road from US Highway 101 on Tuesday, May 16.
These convoys will be escorted by the California Highway Patrol and will include intermittent full closures of Nacimiento-Fergusson Road from 8 am until 7 pm. Motorists wishing to travel east/west in the morning must do so before the first convoy begins.
Motorists will encounter delays during the movement of these four convoys westbound from 8 am to 10 am and 2 pm to 4 pm and eastbound from 11 am to 1 pm andfrom5 pm to 7 pm. Motorists who wish to travel on Nacimiento-Fergusson road should be in vehicles not exceeding 30 feet in length and a weight of 15 tons.
These convoys will include about 50% of the rock and sand necessary to create concrete abutments for the new bridge. Future convoys will transport additional rock and sand, two mobile batch plants, two concrete boom pump trucks, vacuum trucks and rebar cages. Dates for these convoys will be announced at a later date.
The steel girders for the new bridge are currently being fabricated at a plant in Vallejo, CA. This $24 million project is expected to be open to the public in mid-September.
Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway work zones.

Big Sur California 
Hello, a myself and a fellow cyclist had long planned out first bike tour south along the PCH from SF to SD. We will be flying from our homes in Virginia next week and plan to get the wheels on asphalt on May 21st. We weren’t entirely aware of what had happened to the area until recently, where I then stumbled upon this blog. I see there are major road closures. Do you have any detours and alternative route suggestions for those who are not familiar with the area and had initially planned on riding the PCH the entire way. Thanks!

Hello Carlo,
Bicyclists cannot ride on Highway 1 south of the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge closure. There are no detours in Big Sur. Your detour is to ride parallel to Highway 101. We don’t have information on a specific route but the Aids Ride travels along this route so you may want to look at their website to see if they have posted a route. http://www.aidslifecycle.org
